One of the "interesting" things that you'll notice in India is that you'll rarely (ok, never) see Indian women in bathing suits at non-resort beaches. You do see little girls in bathing suits -- but that's it.
From what I can gather by asking people at work, it's an issue of modesty and not wanting to be gawked at or groped by a bunch of men.
What's even stranger is that you'll see some men at the beach in their underwear cavorting around in the water, walking on the beach, etc.
Doesn't seem fair, eh?
Woman, at least in India, are the weaker sex.
