Honor Killings

Honor killings in india have been making headlines on a frequent basis as more young people want to marry for love instead of for family or caste -- and run into fatal opposition from their families.

In May, a New Delhi-based, 22-year old journalist was allegedly murdered by her mother for wanting to marry a fellow journalist who belonged to a lower caste. in March, a court in the northern state of Haryana sentenced five family members to death for killing a young couple who married within the same sub-caste, which was prohibited by their village council (although not directly related, because of the sub-caste association they were considered "brother" and "sister").

And this past week, a New Delhi teenage couple was brutally murdered by the girl's family for belonging to different castes.

From the police, "We were shocked to see the couple lying dead with blood all over the room. A hammer and a crowbar were also found beside the bodies which had multiple stab wounds and the open wires on the walls suggested electrocution."

The girl's father and uncle have confessed to the murders.
