After visiting Mt. Batur, we stopped at a coffee / spice plantation. They offered a "special" type of coffee that I just had to try.
Luwak coffee (kopi luwak) is coffee made from coffee cherries which have been eaten and passes through the digestive track of the Asian Palm Civet. The beans are then collected, process hygienically, and given only a medium roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop through the process. Kopi Luwak can only be found on 3 Indonesian islands (Bali, Java, Sumatra) and only about 300 kg. of the coffee is produced in a year.
The coffee was very good -- very rich tasting and no bitterness at all -- easy to drink it black.
It's also very expensive -- over $100 for a pound of coffee -- I paid around $4.00 for 1 cup (so actually not that bad if you think about how much you pay at Starbucks for a coffee).
Unless you dwell on the fact that this is civet poop.
