Bali - Mount Batur

Mt. Batur (5,633 feet above sea level) is one of Bali's active volcanoes. It's first recorded eruption was in 1804. The mountain was active from 1997 to 2000 with the last eruption on July 7, 2000 -- shooting ash 300 meters above the crater.

Major eruptions in pre-historic periods formed the secondary volcano and caldera, which partly filled with water and formed Lake Batur. Since 1800, the volcano has erupted at least 28 times at intervals of between 1 and 39 years. Indonesia has an estimated 500 volcanoes of which 129 are active -- this represents 13% of all active volcanoes worldwide.
