There is a lot of conjecture about why non-Indians aren't allowed to visit most of the Lakshadweep islands. Officially, it's said that it's to protect the environment and the local cultures. Others say that it's because the islands are used as part of India's defense system. Others say that it's because there are native cannibal tribes!
The airport at Agatti Island was extremely small (and heavily guarded) and we weren't allowed into the airport until they were ready to do check-in / security (remember that there is only 1 flight a day in/out).
So while we were waiting for them to let us into the airport for check-in, we were asked to wait in a open hut that we called the "transit lounge" --- nice way to wait for a flight!
