Shravanbelagola is one of the most important Jain pilgrim centers of India. The statue of the Jain saint Gommateshwara (AD 981) carved out of a mountain is situated in this small town atop the Indragiri hills (south-east of Hassan in Karnataka). The colossal monolithic statue is 58 ft. and is symbolic of the renunciation of worldly possessions.
The statue is reached by climbing 700 steps carved into the steep granite slope.
When we reached there in the very hot mid-afternoon and found out that we had to do the climb barefoot -- we decided to pass (I know, we are lazy wimps!).
