Jaipur - Janta Mantar

Next up the Jantar Mantar observatory -- a collection of architectural astronomical instruments built by Jai Singh II between 1727 and 1737. It's the largest stone observatory in the world that is still in working condition.

The observatory consists of fourteen geometric devices for measuring time, predicting eclipses, tracking stars' locations, etc.

The Samrat Yantra, the largest sundial in the world, is 90 feet high and accurately tells the time within 2 seconds -- its face is angled at 27 degrees, the latitude of Jaipur and the chhatri on top of the sundial is used as a platform for announcing auspicious events (like eclipses).

The observatory was really impressive -- it's kind of unbelievable how accurate all of the sundials were -- glad I didn't skip this site.
