Sarnath: Archaeological Museum

The Sarnath Archaeological Museum is the oldest Archaeological Survey site museum in India. In 1904, the government decided to construct a museum adjacent to the excavated site at Sarnath. The building was completed in 1910. The museum was surprisingly good -- the Ashoka Pillar is its most famous sculpture -- along with that there were numerous Buddhist and Hindu sculptures ranging from 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD -- everything in the museum is from Sarnath.
