A modern Buddhist temple, Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, was built in 1931. It's famous for its frescoes by Japanese painter Kosetsu Nosu.
The huge bell that dominates the entrance was a gift from Japan's royal family.
The tree (a Bodhi tree) was started from a sapling brought from a tree in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan tree in turn originated from the original tree that Buddha sat in Bodh Gaya and gained enlightenment 2,500 years ago.
